Haiku House

We spent the first half of May on the island of Oahu with my family (12 of us total!)

We had such a wonderful time. Of course there wasn’t a dull moment, and even still we didn’t get to everything we wanted to do.

I’m just now getting through my photos from the trip, which is almost as fun as experiencing it the first time 🙂 I didn’t do any editing or posting there – I debated a bit, but when I read Mark Twain’s sentiments on his island visit, I thought, yes, that’s it, and as much as I love working on photos, I knew that it would be better saved for later on. Mark wrote:

“I went to Maui to stay a week and remained five. I had a jolly time. I would not have fooled away any of it writing letters under any consideration whatever… I never spent so pleasant a month before, or bade any place good-bye so regretfully.”

When you’re in Hawaii, you want to be in Hawaii, you know? Experience it for all it’s worth.

My parents rented a house in the mountains in Kaneohe, which was perfect. Enough space for everyone, we were able to cook our own meals (we made a dinner rotation, so each couple cooked a few nights), & it was close enough to everywhere we wanted to be, but far enough away from everywhere busy to be very peaceful, serene, and quiet (besides that my kids were there, obviously 😉

The house we stayed in was very unique. The living room was beautifully open and bright, the bedrooms, and bathrooms especially, were straight out of the 70’s, and the backyard was amazing.

There were mountains to the right, and the ocean to the left. You could see the Haiku stairs in the mountains & Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station down by the shore (which was actually the first place attacked on December 7, 1941!) The kids loved watching military planes try to land there, it must have been a tricky spot because it usually took a couple attempts.

Our time at the house was filled with lots of time in the pool, countless meals & snacks, live music provided by Alex & Landon, & late night scrabble games (with a whole lot of words that would not have passed any scrabble judge worth their title.)

It was a great time.

More from Hawaii to come….
